The Center was created on December 1, 2011. It has been operating since January 1, 2012.

The Center for Research on Contemporary Polish Drama began, as part of the National Program for the Development of the Humanities, a five-year project "Dramat polski. Reaktywacja" [Polish Drama: A Resurgence]. Its purpose is to study comprehensively Polish dramaturgy of the second half of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty first centuries, to prepare scholarly editions of the most important dramatic works, and to publish and popularize the plays of selected playwrights. Therefore, the Center has been working on the preparation and publishing of a series of ten volumes of drama and an anthology of contemporary drama titled Trans/formacja. Dramat polski po roku 1989 [Trans/formation: Polish Drama After 1989].
To create a possibly full and diverse picture of Polish dramaturgy, efforts were made to organize an international conference (2013) and to publish a post-conference volume (2014). The publication of dramatic works will be accompanied by a cycle of performative readings, popularizing Polish dramaturgy.
The first volume of the anthology, which is scheduled for publication in December 2012, will include the following plays:
